Can You Install Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Over Tile? Let’s Dive In

If you are looking to refresh your home, you might be staring down an old, outdated ceramic or porcelain tile floor and wondering about the logistics of a demolition. The dust, the noise, the labor costs, and the absolute mess of ripping up old tile can make anyone put their renovation plans on hold.

Naturally, a golden question arises: can you put vinyl flooring over tile?

The short answer is yes! You can absolutely lay vinyl flooring over tile.

However, before you go purchasing cartons of new vinyl plank flooring over tile surfaces, there are critical structural, technical, and warranty-related guidelines you must follow to ensure your new floor looks beautiful and stands the test of time.

The Big Benefit of Newton’s Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring: No Demo!

Homeowners and designers love the idea of installing vinyl flooring over tile because it saves an immense amount of time, reduces mess, and saves money on demolition labor.

Furthermore, vinyl inherently feels warmer underfoot than natural ceramic or stone tile. Because vinyl does not conduct heat, it won't pull warmth away from your feet on chilly mornings.

Upgrading your old stone or ceramic surface to a high-quality Click Lock SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) vinyl floor gives you a softer, quieter, and physically warmer surface to walk on.

The 3 Golden Rules for Installing LVP Over Tile

You cannot simply drop click-lock planks onto any old tiled surface and call it a day. To protect your investment and ensure your floor performs flawlessly, the existing tile substrate must meet stringent technical requirements.

Check the Flatness and "Ledging"

The absolute most important factor when installing LVP over tile is ensuring the surface is clean, dry, smooth, and most important… level. What do we mean by level? We mean that your subfloor must be flat to 3/16” over an 8-foot span.

If your old tile was poorly installed and has "ledging" (where the edge of one tile sits higher than the one next to it), it will telegraph directly through your new floor or put undue stress on the locking joints. High areas must be mechanically ground down to achieve the proper flatness rating.

  • Telegraph: Telegraphing occurs when underlying subfloor defects, such as ridges, dips, or rough textures, mirror directly onto the surface of your finished flooring under natural light.

Mind the Grout Joints

The second golden rule is related to grout joints.

  • Grout joints less than ¼” wide are completely acceptable to cover without prep work, provided the tile surface is perfectly flat.
  • Wider grout joints or uneven floors cannot be left as-is. If your grout lines are wider than the above, you must use a suitable Portland-based leveling compound to fill in the low areas and create a smooth, monolithic plane.

The Tile Must Be Structurally Sound

Your existing tile is now acting as your subfloor, which means it must be structurally sound and free of major defects. If you have loose, cracked, or echoing tiles, they must be repaired or replaced before installation.

A Note on Pre-Attached Underlayment: Newton Click Lock SPC flooring features a premium, pre-attached underlayment. Do not use additional underlayment under any circumstances. Adding a second underlayment will void your product warranty and cause excess deflection, which will permanently damage and break the locking joints of your new floor. Do add a moisture barrier even when installing over tile if installed on concrete as moisture wicks through the grout.

Crucial Technical Considerations Before You Begin

If you are considering a DIY, keep in mind these following guidelines:

  • The Waterproof Rule: While high-quality luxury vinyl flooring is waterproof across its surface and seams, a finished floor is not a complete waterproof installation and is not to be used as a moisture barrier. Clear any standing water immediately to prevent moisture from getting trapped over organic matter underneath, which can promote mold and bacteria.
  • Maintain Expansion Gaps: You must leave a ¼” (6mm) expansion gap anywhere the flooring abuts a vertical surface (walls, doorjambs, or columns). This gap allows the floor to naturally expand and contract with temperature shifts. For rooms greater than 65 lineal feet, increase this expansion gap to ½”.
  • Acclimation Timing: Newton floors do not generally require acclimation. However, if your boxes were stored in extreme temperatures (under 50 degrees or over 100 degrees within the 12 hours leading up to your project, you must acclimate the unopened packages in the installation area for at least 8 hours at service temperature.
  • No Heavy Fixed Objects: Never install heavy kitchen cabinets, islands, or fixed structural objects on top of your floating luxury vinyl planks. The floor must be allowed to float freely; instead, butt the planks up to the cabinetry while maintaining the proper expansion spacing.

Sound Like a Hassle? Leave It to Your Local Newton Retailer!

We’ve all been there…trying to weigh the upfront savings of a DIY vinyl flooring installation against the cost of hiring a professional. On paper, doing it yourself seems like an easy choice. In reality, many first-time installers end up with buckling planks, unsightly gaps, and a floor that needs to be completely replaced within a few seasons. Even worse, improper installation can void your manufacturer warranty, leaving you to foot the bill for new materials, a costly headache if the click-and-lock mechanisms break during removal.

Ultimately, it is always more cost-effective to have the job done right the first time. Newton partners exclusively with the top, most trusted flooring stores across the USA. Your local authorized Newton retailer has the specialized tools, certified installation teams, and deep technical expertise required to evaluate your existing subfloor, handle the necessary leveling preparation, and install your new waterproof flooring flawlessly.
